Think of it this way: it’s as if the currency you hold isn’t cash, but your unique “knowledge currency.” In the past, this currency was robust and scarce. But now, AI, like a tireless “printing press,” is mass-producing your type of “knowledge currency” at low cost. Scarcity drives value; once supply explodes, the purchasing power of your “currency” is inevitably diluted and devalued.
This sensation is not without historical precedent. The juncture we find ourselves in today bears a striking resemblance to the Age of Discovery, over five centuries ago, when sails dotted the horizon.
Consider this: before the great voyages, what was the status of spices from the East—like pepper and cinnamon—in Europe? They were luxury goods, akin to gold, symbols of wealth and status. Why? Because they were scarce. The journey was perilous, the risks immense, and supply was monopolized by a few trade routes.
But what happened when the fleets of Vasco da Gama and Magellan repeatedly rounded the Cape of Good Hope, reaching India and the Spice Islands? The supply of spices surged within a few decades. Prices plummeted. Pepper, once reserved for the nobility, eventually found its way into the kitchens of ordinary households. The commercial dominance of families and cities (like Venice) that had prospered from the traditional overland spice trade vanished.

What were they? They were trade routes, ports, the ability to physically govern and complexly manage distant lands, and the trust forged between crews facing life-and-death situations. These things could not be replicated by a simple cargo ship. They were the true, inflation-proof, and even appreciating core assets of the Age of Discovery.
The same applies today. When basic, codifiable “cognitive spices” (standardized mental labor) begin to deflate under the impact of AI, our personal career development strategy must undergo a fundamental shift: from frantically hoarding “spices” to fully building our own “anti-deflation assets.”
What assets, then, are the “routes” and “ports” that are difficult, if not impossible, for AI to replicate? I believe there are at least three.
The first asset is the ability to solve complex physical problems “on-site.”
Let me share an example from my own experience. Many years ago, I was reviewing a loan for a large manufacturing company. Their financial statements were impeccable, and their technology seemed advanced. But when I visited their production floor for a post-loan inspection, I noticed a detail: their core production line took almost twice as long as competitors’ to reconfigure when switching product models. I asked their engineers, and they offered sophisticated theoretical optimization plans.
However, I privately invited a veteran technician with thirty years of experience. This “sense of responsibility” is a complex human quality, integrating judgment, courage, credibility, and resilience. It is the final firewall of decision-making. In the AI era, characterized by information overload and a proliferation of solutions, individuals who can and dare to take responsibility for outcomes will become increasingly scarce and pivotal. The stronger your “shoulders,” the greater the responsibility you can bear, the higher your intrinsic value floor.
The third asset is the cultivation of a profoundly deep network of human trust.
AI can simulate empathy and generate thoughtful conversations, but it cannot experience the stress of jointly working through an all-nighter, cannot share the quiet drink after a project failure, nor can it silently offer substantive help when your family faces a crisis. Trust, especially deep trust based on shared experiences and values, is forged through prolonged, non-standardized real-world interactions.
This trust network is your most crucial “social capital.” It means assistance in critical moments, the flow of internal information, and flexibility in cooperation beyond mere contracts. AI can make collaboration among strangers more efficient, but it cannot create that “one of us” feeling, refined by the crucible of time. In your network, how many people are there based purely on “cognitive exchange” (I can write reports for you), and how many are based on deep “trust and reliance” (I trust you with this task)? The latter’s “deflationary” resistance is far stronger.
Therefore, ancient wisdom, echoed in the sentiment that “a superior person is not a mere tool,” suggests that truly capable individuals should not be like instruments with a single, fixed, standardized purpose. Tools are easily standardized and easily replaced. But a person who is “not a tool” is like water—it takes the shape of its container, be it square or round, flexibly applying their comprehensive abilities to solve problems in diverse and complex situations.
This, then, is our survival strategy in the “Age of Intellectual Deflation”: to shift from the pursuit of being a “tool” to the cultivation of being “tool-agnostic.” Stop fixating solely on your constantly depreciating “report-writing skills.” Instead, invest in “anti-deflation assets” that depreciate slowly, or even appreciate—your on-site expertise, your capacity for responsibility, your network of trust.
This process is akin to reconfiguring your personal asset portfolio. Reduce “cash-like” assets (pure information processing labor) that are constantly depreciating, and increase “hard physical” assets (the ability to solve real-world problems) and “quality equity” assets (deep trust relationships and accountability).

Become the person who can go to the factory floor and fix the strange noise in the machine; become the one who, when the team is adrift, dares to say, “I’ll take responsibility”; become the person others describe as “reliable—just give it to them.”
When the tide recedes, when the spice holds are full, people will ultimately realize that the most precious things were never the cargo on the ship, but the eyes that read the stars, the hands that tamed the waves, and the companions whose backs you could trust.
